A Career Development Plan for Employers

Employers who want to actively participate in the development of their employees can create a career development plan for their employees to enhance their career opportunities within a corporation or business. Employees receive guidance to achieve their individual goals and for corporations that is important as they increase the possibility of retaining valuable employees. In order to pursue their goals employees often leave a corporation and business where they are currently employed, but with managers interested in their employees creates an atmosphere that is mutually beneficial for all parties involved. A career development plan is just a plan and will not represent specific career opportunities and commitments and managers should implement these plans to develop the potential of employees.
A Career Development Plan Format
Formatting a career development plan for employees should have the following:
• Career goals and objectives in a short-term from one to five years
• Long-term career objectives and goals after five year period
• Experience gained and developed during the first five years
• Training and education available for employees
• Job assignments for employees
• Developmental activities employees actively participated in
• Support process available to employees
• Identification of employees long-term career opportunities and interests
• Identification of all resources available within an organization to employees in achieving their individual goals
• External education
• Mentoring and formal training within a company
Preparing the plan and then the implementation of the plan is important as employees and employers should review the plan and after a period it should be revised and added information should go into an employee’s file. Year-end and mid-year reviews of employees are important to ensure commitment to the plan from both parties. Assessment of progress within the specific plan developed for the employee will need to be done on a regular basis to ensure that the employee has the same goals and career interest after a period of time at a company.

Defining Career Development

Career development is defined by three important aspects, namely managing your life, educate yourself and a career. Career development is determined by individuals based on decisions and actions and the process starts when individuals know themselves, their career interest, skills and aspirations and taking action upon it.
Have a goal and decide where you would like to be in 10 years and take inventory of yourself to define your weaknesses and strengths. Assessment of your own attitude and personality and direction you would like your life to take, will aid you in career development and career opportunities that will arise.
Career development is not just the first job you get and developing that specific opportunity you got, but a life-long commitment to make the best of your life and career opportunities. Career development does not apply only to young students following a specific training schedule or degree to enhance career opportunities.
Children develop an interest in different jobs at a very young age and may pursue that dream or as they grow develop specific sets of skills influencing their career paths. Students deliberate and choose subjects at school which are the foundation of specific career opportunities. Adults often pursue different career opportunities after they have followed a chosen career path for a long period. Further education also enhances opportunities that arise from developing a career.
It is a lifelong process where individuals develop skills, interests, aptitudes and knowledge. Career development will determine the fulfilment of purpose everybody needs in order to lead a successful and promising life. Decent and desired career opportunities will arise with proper career development and a high motivation level is required.
Taking control of your career is the key in job satisfaction and growth and leaving career development up to existing employers is not always an option. Setting in place objectives for occupation improvement and enhancement will boost your self-esteem and put you on the road to success.

My father gave me this book when I graduated from college and five years later, I mailed it to my older brother when he was considering a career change. The concrete advice offered in this book is both practical and insightful, whether you’re just entering the workforce or exploring your career options later in life. It is the “best selling job-hunting book in the world” for a reason. The useful information inspires readers to honestly evaluate their strengths and goals, establish a plan, and execute that plan with care and efficiency. A new version is released every year, so be sure to get the most up-to-date copy. However, even an older edition will be useful.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, By Stephen R. Covey
I’ve read this book two times and will probably read it again very soon. Each time I open it, I learn something new. This isn’t a “quick read” kind of book. I recommend that anyone who is serious about personal and professional development study the lessons here carefully. The habits presented here are thought provoking and truly life changing. Stephen Covey does an amazing job of inspiring and teaching the reader. The information is profound, building on principles of psychology, spirituality and philosophy so be prepared: this is an intense read.

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, By David Allen
Often referred to as GTD, the organizational system presented in this book has gained something of a cult-following in recent years. Originally created for CEOs, the system outlines how to effectively manage an overwhelming workload. I have personally used an adaptation of the GTD program for several years and I love it. The book seems to overcomplicate the process so don’t get too wrapped up in it. I recommend reading it once through and just take notes of things that hit home. Take the parts that are useful and implement them. Don’t worry about following every step precisely, unless you really want that kind of firm structure. If you really get into the GTD-thing, you’ll find plenty of blogs and websites dedicated to discussing techniques for effectively implementing it.

This book is a sort of “Human Relations 101.” It’s broken down into short sections that explain a principle and offer practical examples.
